University of Utah TeleStroke Program
The Northwest Regional Telehealth Resource Center

Dedicated to providing comprehensive, high quality care for patients with cerebrovascular disease.

A multidisciplinary team of physicians including:
. emergency physicians
. neurologists
. neurosurgeons
. radiologists
. physiatrists
works together to provide a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic options. The Stroke Center therapies include medical treatments, Telestroke consultations, advanced neurosurgical techniques, and interventional neuroradiology procedures.
The Stroke Center emphasizes acute intervention and is engaged in clinical trials with the goal of optimizing outcomes for stroke patients. The "Brain Attack" Team is notified as soon as a stroke is suspected, often before the patient reaches the hospital. Advanced radiologic techniques such as CT angiography, diffusion and perfusion MR imaging, and cerebral angiography are available to aid in quick and accurate diagnosis.

The Telestroke program provides 24 hour on call neurologists to diagnose and treat stroke patients at 6 rural hospitals in Utah by using real time videoconferencing and teleradiology of radiological CT images. The limited numbers of stroke specialists, the geographic & transport barriers combined with the narrow therapeutic window for stroke make the Telestroke program an essential program in providing excellence in patient care. Stroke specialists consult from the Stroke Center and from their own homes to hospitals over 400 miles away from the center. Acute Stroke Management Protocols have been developed in collaboration with the remote facilities.
